F & T Goodwin, part of the Tripod Crest Group; recently undertook surfacing works on the Isle of Wight. Alongside being the first time the company has undertaken works on the island; this was also the first contract with Sturminster Construction Limited.
This contract was developed following an initial enquiry made by Sturminster Construction to our sister division, Tripod Crest Planing; who collaborated with F & T Goodwin to provide a complete planing and surfacing solution for Sturminster Construction’s contract to construct the car park and external areas of Lidl’s new supermarket in Newport.
Led by Cathal O’Boyle, F & T Goodwin worked closely with Sturminster Construction to develop the right pavement solution. We established a good relationship with the main asphalt supplier on the island – Wight Building Materials Limited (a joint venture between Eurovia and Aggregate Industries for the Isle of Wight Highways PFI contract) for the sustainable recycling of planings and supply of asphalt from the Blackwater Quarry facility.
The programme for the scheme required detailed review to ensure our resources arrived on the island via ferry from Southampton to East Cowes; comprising two low loaders and crew vans.
We arrived on the Isle of Wight on a Monday morning and Cathal undertook the final co-ordination with Sturminster Construction to ensure the areas to be resurfaced or newly laid could be safely accessed whilst other contractors continued to complete their works inside the Lldl store.
Over 1800m2 of existing carriageway was planed using our Wirtgen 1.0m tracked planer and transported to Blackwater Quarry; where it was recycled for incorporation back in to road base and binder course materials for future schemes on the island.
The over the course of a day and a half, F & T Goodwin laid 190 tonnes of asphalt material, comprising 20mm binder course, 10mm close graded SMA surface course for carriageways and 6mm close graded surface course material.
The works were successfully completed within the required timescales and quality standards; which built an important reputation with Sturminster Construction on our first project working together. Since the Isle of Wight scheme; we have subsequently carried out a similar contract for Sturminster Construction at another Lidl store in Enfield, North London; which we hope will lead to further schemes in the future.
This scheme demonstrates the value and quality that F & T Goodwin and its associated partners within the Tripod Crest group can provide for Customers and we look forward to developing similar relationships with other new Customers throughout 2017 and beyond.
